CECS 5300- Research Activity #5 (Week 10 - 11)

Task: Go here: http://iamtryingtobelieve.com/  Where is the problem solving? What are you  doing? What is the problem with this site? What creative solutions to this did you try?

This website definitely confuses its visitors by the unorganized content and blurred images. In fact, I took the word “Parepin” and searched for it. I think the website was intentionally designed in this way to take the visitors’ attention and lead them to some information and secrets. In 2007, the MTV website published an article named Weird Web Trail: Conspiracy Theory — Or Marketing For Nine Inch Nails LP?” The author stated that the IAmTryingtoBelieve.com dedicated to information on ‘Parepin,’ a drug allegedly added to the water supply by the federal government at some unknown date to protect citizens from bioterror attacks.” However, the website has been designed in a very weird way. Therefore, there are two possibilities. The first, the web designer of this site has intentionally designed it with blurred components and words overlapping to confuse the readers and let them search for more information about the topic. Honestly, this is what exactly happened to me when I looked at this website for the first time, I couldn’t understand it and turn to the search. The second possibility is that the designer maybe was not good enough to design the website in a clear way, and he/she didn’t arrange the website’s content accurately.

Moreover, the designer used some secrets with his design. I accidently found a way to read the website content in a clear way. If you select the text you will be able to read it. Look at the following image, and you will realize that. The image has the same paragraph; the only difference that the left part of the image is not clear, and the right part is highlighted with a clear written paragraph which is easy to read. I think the designer has done this for a purpose, and this still confuses me.

Now, if we need to fix these issues we have to understand the purpose of the website. The most important question is this website was deigned to be as it is currently appeared. Let’s assume the answer is no, then we need to redesign it. The first thing is to find out a way to fix the website’s content and make it readable and understandable for everyone. For this purpose, I have three major steps. First, the website should have a standard writing style for words and head titles. This can be done by unifying the letters’ style, size, and color. Second, all images should be replaced with new clear images. Some images are old so we may correct and redesign them by using photo editors.   Third, changing the website background to something simple, such as plain light colors and avoid using pictures or textures.  However, the website doesn’t have references or extra friendly web links that may help readers to find out more information about the topic.

The website was designed in 2007. According to Godaddy the website has been updated many times. The last update was on 13- January 2011, however, the owners still want the website with vague content, idea, and information. In my opinion, the design disturbs the readers and leads them to notice some problems which may make them exit from the website and never back. I didn’t leave the website because it was a part of my research activity, and I have searched more to understand it. Thus, the most important thing is to attract the readers by change the design and provide them clear and straight information in order to make it acceptable.
